DON'T STOP YOUR WORSHIP TO SING A SONG

As singers and musicians we have a great tendency to focus on the excellence of our musical capabilities. We are always eager and anxious to sing the new chorus we just learned. We get creative in our chord structures and the harmonies we sing. We use our creativity to put a new spin on an old song. Whatever it takes to make our worship “fresh.” These are not bad thing. We should always strive to be the best in the gifts God has given. But to worship leaders and worship teams, to praise bands and choirs, to Pastors and to the church, I encourage you, “Do not stop your worship to sing a song!” Although our music should be worship, worship is not music. Too often we as Christians tend to get that mixed up. We think our worship is when we put on some music and lift our hands and tell the Lord how much we love and adore Him, but that is only a small part of what true worship is and should only be a continuation of a life of worship. True worship is not just musical. It’s not just singing a love song to the Lord. True worship is in how we act. It’s in how we think. It’s in the kind of attitude that we have. It’s in our response to situations that we go through. I constantly teach that worship is an intense love or admiration for God. With that said, do you worship God in how you act at work? Do you worship Him in the things that you think about? Do you show an intense love for the Father in all situations and in your attitude? I hope that we can all say yes to those questions. Matthew 22:37 says “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.” As a singer or musician it’s easy to put your heart and soul into the music. It’s easy to find your mind all wrapped up in if the praise team is singing the right harmony or not. As a Pastor it’s easy to find yourself worrying about if the sound is too loud and if people are getting offended. As a member of the congregation it’s easy to get caught up in whether the worship leader is singing an hymn or a new praise chorus. Again, let me encourage you. Don’t stop your worship to sing a song. When people think about the word worship, they think of it with a musical connotation. In reality, although worship can involve music, worship really has nothing to do with music. As a matter of fact, if someone can’t worship the Lord without music, chances are, they truly don’t know how to worship. To live a lifestyle of worship means to show an intense love for the Father in everything that you do, say, think, as well as in your attitude and actions. I pray that your life will be a life of continuous worship to the Lord. May God Bless You as you Bless the Lord!
